Belltown Dome has been a cherished part of our community since 1967, serving as a hub for recreational activities and bringing us together year after year. Over the decades, it’s been more than just a place for ice sports; it’s been a place where friendships have been made and memories created.
However, the Dome now faces significant challenges. I was recently informed by City staff that the refrigeration system for the ice surface has reached the end of its life and would require extensive and costly repairs. Additionally, the overall condition of the dome’s structure, its aluminum skin, and support amenities has deteriorated, requiring substantial investment to maintain.
After thorough review and consideration of potential solutions, City staff have concluded that transitioning Belltown Dome to a natural ice pad is the most feasible option for the coming season. This change will allow the community to continue using the rink for ice sports and public skating, preserving the activities that are so important to us all.
I share the disappointed of this news, along with many other community members, and I expect like me residents will have many questions and concerns. This why I have worked with City staff to organize a public information session that will be held on Thursday, September 12, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre. This will provide residents with an opportunity to discuss the transition and address any questions with City staff that you may have.
In the meantime, if you have any questions in advance of the meeting, you can email my office at bayward@ottawa.ca.
