There is no question that the Rideau Canal is one of the most iconic symbols of our city. There is also no question that it is a source of recreation, transportation, history and more for both residents and visitors.
The City of Ottawa, the National Capital Commission and Parks Canada want to hear from residents on how the caretakers of both the Rideau Canal and the land that surrounds it can continue be a valuable resource for generations to come?
Residents can provide their input through the Rideau Canal Cultural Landscape Study:
The study will focus on the 8.5-kilometre section of the canal corridor between the Ottawa Locks and the Hog’s Back Locks.
Details about the study can be found on the City’s public engagement page. Residents are invited to participate in the study through a variety of ways:
- complete a survey, sometime between now and December 8
- participate in a virtual meeting
- visit a pop up kiosk at the Lansdowne Christmas Market on November 25
- send a comment to one of our partners
Throughout the study, residents and visitors will be asked questions about how they use the canal and what they value most about the canal in terms of:
- History
- Recreation
- Transportation
- Tourism
- Visual Quality & Design
- Park Space
- National Pride
- Environment
The canal has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a National Historic Site of Canada, and a Canadian Heritage River. By contributing to the Rideau Canal Cultural Landscape Study residents and visitors can help preserve the beauty and recreational opportunities of this waterway for generations to come.
