At this week’s Transit Commission meeting, I raised concerns on behalf of Bay ward residents, about OC Transpo service. The first question I asked focused on ensuring the safety and reliability of the LRT train line. The Light Rail Regulatory Monitor and Compliance Officer’s Annual Report for 2023 addressed the monitoring of Line 1 maintenance. I emphasized the importance of applying lessons learned to the Stage 2 LRT system, which will serve as a critical backbone for our city, necessitating assurances of its reliability.
The new bus route system will commence service alongside the Trillium Transit line, scheduled to begin in late August. Bay Ward has retained most of its routes, with the exception of the 258. I have asked that an On Demand Bus System be considered for Crystal Bay/Crystal Beach area to make up for the loss of this route. At this time the On Demand Bus system is a pilot project only in Blackburn Hamlet but if successful, could be considered for other communities. I wanted to ensure that Crystal Bay/Crystal Beach be considered.
I also addressed the issue of wait times for Para Transpo service, as I’ve received complaints from users. Some have reported waiting up to an hour for accessible taxi services. This complaint will be reviewed. If you have concerns about OC Transpo or Para Transpo services, please contact my office at bayward@ottawa.ca, and we will ensure that they are brought to the attention of OC Transpo management.
Over the next five years there will be a review of OC Transpo bus maintenance facilities as more electric buses come into service. I proposed that further investment in the Queensview Bus Depot property be halted, and that it be considered for decommissioning. This is a valuable parcel of city land near a new transit station at Queensview Drive and will be opening for revenue service in less than three years. This site would be an excellent location for a major facility, such as a large-scale recreation center or possibly affordable housing. At this time the Queensview site is being reviewed. Queensview/Pinecrest Secondary Plan has already recommended that this city property be used for a recreation complex. I will keep the community informed if the City pursues this direction.
