I requested information on the number of trees removed per year. This information is currently not readily available. However, with the new tree protection by-law, the City will be collecting more detailed and specific information about its implementation and they will report on those numbers annually. Their first reporting will be in Q1 2022, after the by-law has been in effect for a year.
That report will include the number of permits issued, so number of trees removed. And it will also include reporting on resulting compensation.
Separate from the by-law reporting, the City does have information on the number of trees it plants each year – it is generally about 125,000 trees/year and that is spread across all the city’s tree planting programs in both the rural and urban areas.
