Construction is progressing near Kichi Sibi Station (formerly Dominion Station), along the former Transitway trench to the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway (SJAM). Excavation in this area is required to connect the existing trench to the Parkway Tunnel. Line drilling started in late June and excavation of the bedrock began at the beginning of July. Construction activities include rock breaking, drilling (for rock stabilization) and hauling of excavated material. Impactful work, including the rock breaking, drilling and excavation will be reserved to daytime hours (Monday to Saturday from 7am to 10pm and Sunday from 9am to 10pm), while less impactful work including hauling of excavated material is planned for overnight hours (Monday to Friday from 10pm to 7am). These works are expected to continue until handover of the site to station constructors early in 2023.
A temporary pedestrian bridge will be constructed over the LRT guideway excavation at the future Kichi Sibi Station site to maintain pedestrian and cyclist access to the existing bus stop during these works. Construction of the bridge is expected to begin once the final designs have been completed. The pedestrian bridge will remain in service until the opening of the station concourse, connecting the north and south sides of the guideway.
Installation of Kichi Sibi Station servicing (water and sewer) is expected to take place before handover of the site to station constructors. The station services will tie into existing water and sewer lines at Dominion Avenue. Excavation will be required to complete the tie-in. A separate notice will be provided in advance of these works with additional details.
The start of construction of Kichi Sibi Station will mark a significant change in construction activities. Construction should be less disruptive and will include activities such as formwork, rebar, concrete placement, structural steel installation, utility connections, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work, etc. It is expected most activities will be completed during daytime hours, with occasional or intermittent need to conduct overnight work.
We appreciate the construction activities currently taking place at Kichi Sibi Station are at times disruptive to nearby residents. Unfortunately, excavating through the bedrock is required. The high volume of work in this area, including some overnight activities, will allow this impactful stage of construction to be completed as quickly as possible.
We understand enduring this work is made easier when you are kept informed. Building large infrastructure projects is complex and involves significant coordination and scheduling of crews and equipment. We do our best to provide communications in advance, however work and schedules can change quickly in the field. Timely and accurate communication of activities remains our highest priority.
We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work through these challenging conditions together.
