Solid Waste Services is responsible for managing the collection of garbage, recycling, organics and leaf and yard waste from homes and City facilities, as well as the management of the Yellow Bag Program for small street-front businesses.
Recycling in the Parks Pilot
Solid Waste Services also runs the Recycling in the Parks Pilot which will be expanded from 10 to approximately 33 parks of different sizes and locations throughout the city in 2021. The 23 new locations include Mooney’s Bay.
In Bay Ward, Kingsmere Park is one of the parks selected to be part of the expanded pilot program.
Household Hazardous Waste
In 2021, the City is planning to host a number of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depots, which provide a way for residents to dispose of corrosive, flammable or poisonous materials for free. However, no events can be held while Ottawa is in a red (control) or grey (lockdown) zone under Ontario’s colour-coded COVID-19 response framework. Details about the 2021 dates and locations will be posted on ottawa.ca/hhw as soon as they are confirmed and when it is safe for residents and staff to hold the events. In 2020, residents helped divert more than 698 tonnes of hazardous materials from the landfill.
