This past week was National Volunteer Week, dedicated to honoring and appreciating the contributions of individuals and groups who generously donate their time and skills to various organizations and causes within our communities. This annual event is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the significance of volunteering and encourage more people to engage and give back to their community.
Last Wednesday morning at City Hall myself, and several council colleagues, had the privilege of honoring and celebrating an exceptional group of individuals with an appreciation breakfast – our Winter Trail volunteers. These volunteers play a crucial role in supporting and maintaining our city’s winter trail system. Following the appreciation breakfast Mayor Mark Sutcliffe took a few moments before the City Council meeting to recognize the winter trail volunteers. The Mayor praised them for their efforts and the importance of the work they do to provide this unique feature not only for our residents but also visitors to our city.

Our winter trails are not just paths through snow; they are avenues of joy, connection, and natural beauty. Whether it’s cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking or simply taking a brisk walk surrounded by a winter wonderland, these trails offer something for everyone. But behind the scenes, there are a large, dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure these trails are safe, groomed, and accessible for all to enjoy throughout the winter season.
I’m incredibly proud of our trail volunteers, especially those involved with the Britannia Winter Trail. This trail is particularly special to me because I was part of its creation back in 2019. The fact that it is run by volunteers adds to its charm, highlighting the community spirit and dedication to maintaining such a valuable outdoor space in Bay Ward. Their commitment is not just about grooming snow; it’s about fostering a sense of community and ensuring that everyone can experience the magic of winter without economic barriers.
Thank you to all of our residents who volunteer! You are the backbone of our community, and your contributions are truly immeasurable.
