I had the privilege of attending the opening of the Barbara Crook and Dan Greenberg Mental Health Centre at Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) on Thursday. The new Centre has an expanded in-patient floor with single rooms and a light-filled out-patient clinic with an exercise room, meeting and treatment rooms, a kitchen and there is a campaign to build a garden for clients to experience and engage in nurturing.
The Queensway Carleton Hospital has experienced a steady increase in the number of people arriving at, or being brought to, the Emergency Department (ED) in a mental health or substance abuse crisis. Alarmingly, of the 31% of mental health visits to the ED which are referred to the on-call psychiatrist, 22% of those are admitted to hospital. The new mental health unit will help provide individuals with a safe and more modern facility to get the assistance and supports that they need.
The new mental health Centre is one of several initiatives that is supported by the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation. Visit here to learn more about the Foundation and how you can help support the work they do.
