As part of the Stage 2 O-Train Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, the decommissioned section of the Queensway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Station will be demolished. In support of these works, the Transitway between Lincoln Fields Station and Iris Station will be fully closed for four consecutive weekends for daytime and overnight work.
WHAT
Closure of the Transitway; critical daytime and overnight work for demolition of Queensway Station.
WHEN
Friday, February 10 to Monday, February 13
Friday, February 17 to Monday, February 20,
Friday, February 24 to Monday, February 26,
Friday, March 3 to Monday, March 6, 2023
between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
WHY
The closure of a section of the Transitway from Lincoln Fields Station to Iris Station is required to safely demolish the decommissioned section of Queensway Station. These works include removal of associated debris, glass, concrete, and steel. This is required to create space for the LRT guideway on the eastern side of the existing Transitway.
WHERE
Work will be on the Transitway, just north and south of the Highway 417 underpass.
The construction work outlined in this notice is subject to change. Work may be delayed or extended due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
ANTICIPATED IMPACTS
The station will be demolished using excavators, hydraulic shears and jackhammers. Trucks will be used to haul excavated materials away from the work site. Noise and vibration from trucks and heavy equipment is expected.
For residents whose property borders the Transitway, equipment in the area may cause additional noise and occasional vibration as the work progresses.
Site lighting for overnight work will be required for safety. Crews will place and/or direct the light away from residences to mitigate impacts.
Pedestrians and cyclist mobility on the nearby multiuse pathways will not be impacted during these works. A spotter will be stationed under the bridge to ensure public safety during demolition.
The Transitway between Lincoln Fields and Iris Station will reopen during the weekdays, Monday from 5:00 am to Friday evening at 8:00 pm. Transit users will use the western platform at Queensway Station for service both north and south along the Transitway.
Following demolition of Queensway Station, shelters will be installed on the western platform, which will provide continued transit service throughout the completion of LRT guideway work, until LRT service begins.
