Kiewit Eurovia Vinci has been granted a Noise By-law Exemption for the area of the Connaught Tunnel from the future Queensview Station at Leons (across Connaught and into Connaught Park) to the Pinecrest Creek Pathway.
The permit is only for construction equipment related to dewatering activities at excavation sites and utility relocation work (i.e. Restricted to pumps, generators, and misc/minor equipment related)
The permit is valid from June 1 to September 1st, a total of 90 days. An extension to this exemption will probably be required.
Some of the machines noted in the exemption must operate continually 24 hours a day, for the following activities:
- Dewatering activities at excavation sites (for utility work, and tunnel excavation) require pumps and generators that operate at all times in order to keep water out of the excavated work areas. If the pumps are turned off during overnight hours, water can fill up the pits during that time, and the work cannot move forward. Investigative work has found water where the Project Contractor hasn’t expected it to be, so they wouldn’t be able to commit to these machines only being in one specific area.
- Utility relocation work (needed to move utility lines out of the way of the future tunnel) will require temporary connections in order to maintain service for homes. These connections also require pumps in order to maintain the service lines for residents at all hours of the day.
