In Canada, National Seniors Day occurs on October 1st and coincides with the International Day of Older Persons as established by the United Nations. The 2023 theme of the International Day of Older Persons is: Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations. It is a day to celebrate the wisdom, achievements, and rights of Older Adults and to strengthen solidarity among generations.
This year, this celebration comes during a time when the City is celebrating the successes of the City’s Older Adult Plan (OAP) 2020-2022 and evaluating the lessons learned through the years of implementing the OAP. Our collaborative work will focus on sharing ideas, suggestions, insights, and expertise to create an updated age-friendly strategy for the City.
I am proud to have recently been designated at the City as one of the Council Liaisons for Older Adults, A role that I share with Councillor Allan Hubley. This is fitting as Bay Ward has the highest population of older adults (seniors) in the City. In my role I will one of my priorities will be to listen, understand, represent, elevate, and respond to the concerns and suggestions of older residents. And I look forward to connecting and working with residents in this important journey to advance equity and inclusion for older adults.
