According to the National Capital Commission website, work on the trail on the east side is still on track for completion this summer. However, bridge replacement has been set back to Fall 2023 / Winter 2024.
The website states the following timelines:
Phase 2: Summer 2023–Fall 2023
- Improvements to trail.
- Rehabilitation of the twin culverts near the Britannia water purification plant.
Phase 3: Fall 2023–Winter 2024
- Installation of the new prefabricated steel pedestrian bridge.
The NCC had hoped to have the bridge installed this spring/summer, but unfortunately a key part of the project was not able to be completed due to the warmer winter weather. With insufficient ice thickness, they were unable to create the bridge piles and concrete abutments. Currently, the NCC is considering other options, possibly a barge, for this key piece of work to be done.
The project is complex, but installation is being completed in this way to avoid significant tree removal, which would occur if they chose to build the new bridge with a more direction installation.
