This week my office hosted the Stage 2 LRT 2024 Spring Update. Stage 2 Staff presented an update of the work we can expect to see over the next 6 months, but also into the longer-term forecast.
With seven stations being created across Bay Ward, we have seen, and continue to see, a massive amount of construction. I understand that the construction of the new LRT system has been challenging for many, this update brought with it a lot of promise for the work that will lead to long-term benefits for our community. Once completed, the new LRT system will bring numerous advantages, including reduced traffic congestion, improved accessibility, and enhanced connectivity across the city. There is a promising future ahead!
One very exciting piece presented this week was the Richmond Road Complete Streets design. This multi-year project will begin this year, and includes the portion of Richmond Road from the bridge over the Kichi Zībī Mīkan to east of Cleary Avenue. These designs will include reconfigurations of intersections, including raised crossings, separated bicycle lanes, sidewalks, bus platforms and bus shelters. This work will also include the tree planting and landscaping of Richmond Road and the Byron Linear Pathway.
A new webpage will be created specific for Richmond Road complete streets where residents can send questions. My office will be sure to share this information when it’s available.
Other topics discussed included:
Highway 417 On-Ramp Closure at Pinecrest:
The on-ramp is expected to re-open in early August. When completed this work is completed there is the possibility that the north/west ramp may be closed temporarily. If this is necessary Stage 2 Staff will provide information on the closure, which my office will be sure to share with residents.
75 Cleary Deep Utility Works:
The work just east of 75 Cleary is currently taking place and is expected to be completed by Fall of 2024. This work involves deep excavation, replacement of watermain, stormwater and sanitary infrastructure.
Staff also noted that the temporary detour through the old Kristy’s Restaurant will be closed in October of 2024.
Kichi Zībī Mīkan (KZM):
Construction in May/June is ongoing, with the back filling of the tunnel.
In 2024/2025 construction of permanent reconfiguration of the KZM will be ongoing. Many have asked to see the plans for this realignment. Staff stated the work for this is ongoing, and staff will share these documents as they become available.
We can also expect that during the Summer of 2024 the construction of the Cleary pedestrian underpass will continue.
Richmond Road Cut and Cover Tunnel:
Tunnel construction is near completion, when this work is finished backfilling will commence.
