It was with a heavy heart that I learned this week of the passing of my friend, colleague, and former City Councillor, Diane Deans. I was made aware that Diane was in palliative care and had the opportunity to spend some time with her while she was in the hospital. Even while suffering from the rages of cancer, Diane was strong and clear thinking. She was aware of her own legacy and held no regrets for her amazing work for both her ward residents and for the city overall in her 28 years on city council. She was an inspiration to me, and I continue to be proud of the efforts she made to make Ottawa a better place to live. Diane had high ethical standards for herself and for the city. She believed in the need for transparency in all city projects. I appreciated her persistence in asking that all facts be on the table when we made decisions. I was pleased with City Council’s motion to rename the Greenboro Community Centre to the Diane Deans Greenboro Community Centre.
I was honoured to have the opportunity to spend some time with Diane and tell her what an inspiration she has been to me.
Rest in peace my friend.
