Here comes the sun!
We have all had our fill of winter this year and spring is now upon us, so let’s get out and enjoy the weather! Soon we will see more bikes on the road and children playing in the parks. We love our warm weather season but we need to be aware that spring brings its own cautions.
With warm weather comes bugs and heat. We need to be prepared on how to deal with possible exposures to Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus, not to mention bicycle safety and other summer time health issues. The Ottawa Public Health team will be coming out to our Bay Ward community on Thursday, April 4th to talk to us about how to take precautions and provide good tips to have a healthy and safe summer. Please register for this valuable session at bayward@ottawa.ca
We need to watch the water levels on our rivers such as those who live along the edge of the Ottawa River in our communities. Only two years ago we saw water rise to the point of reaching the top of our bike path that acts as a berm to our neighbourhoods. To address potential flooding and water related concerns, I will be hosting a meeting called “Preparations for Spring Melt – Flood Plain and Water Pooling“. This meeting will be held at Ron Kolbus on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 7pm.
Another tradition of spring is the annual Bay Ward Mother’s Day Tea which will be held at Ron Kolbus Lakeside Gardens on May 7, 2019. Please contact our office to register your attendance at bayward@ottawa.ca. Interested in volunteering? We would love to have you join us for this fun and upbeat event.
With summer weather we can start to play outside and go for swims, bike rides and runs. How about doing a local Bay Ward race? I am proud to announce that I will be co-sponsoring a triathlon in Britannia Park on Saturday, June 8, 2019. This is an opportunity for the community to come out and support a local athletic event and cheer people on or participate. The Britannia Park Triathlon will be fundraising for Britannia Woods Community House to give local children in need more opportunities for summer programs. I hope you will join us for the exciting event. Even though winter is almost gone we are already looking ahead to next year to start planning for a proposal to the city for a cross country ski trail through Britannia Park and surrounding area. I will be organizing a working group for this project in the upcoming weeks. We hope that we will come up with a plan to help our community find even more enjoyment of our wintry landscape along a ski trail through our community.
