On Wednesday November 27th, I voted along with my Council colleagues to regulate short-term rentals, also known as Air BnB, and other platforms. This is good news for our community as I have heard from many residents of their concern for houses in their neighbourhood that are rented out on a short term basis with no homeowner present. These “ghost hotels” will be prohibited. Short-term rental operations where the homeowner is present will continue to operate.
Across the city the proliferation of short-term rentals in Ottawa has had a negative effect on already low vacancy rates. Ottawa has a growing need for more affordable rental housing, these regulations will help improve the housing market for all residents.
