Today we celebrated passing the one million mark in the number of residents living with the boundaries of the city of Ottawa. This puts us in the big leagues of cities in Canada. Also, gives us more reason to build significant infrastructure to keep up with our population growth. We need that LRT system asap. We need safer roads including safer walking and cycling routes.
We need to attract and grow our economy in a way that takes into account our climate change emergency. Measures such as having better public transit and green strategies. We need to be mindful of the mounting garbage we create that includes one-use plastics, and do more to reduce, reuse, and recycle. One of the best tests of living in a healthy neighbourhood is how long it takes you to walk places. Walkability means reaching transit or picking up essentials from a store within walking distance. With LRT Stage 2 coming in our future, this is a positive goal for Bay Ward.
Hitting the million mark also means creating more affordable housing so no one is left behind. Let’s celebrate our one million residents milestone and make this an even better city for all.
