Thank you to Mayor Mark Stucliffe for joining me this afternoon to visit with two of our community partners, Britannia Woods Community House and Michelle Height’s Community Centre. Both of these groups provide supports and resources for children, youth and families who live in fixed and low-income communities. With partner agencies they host a variety of programs aimed at improving the health and well-being of our community.
During our visit we received a tour of each facility and had an opportunity to discuss some of the challenges and successes that they have had and what opportunities there are to work together to improve and expand the programming and services they offer going forward.

The Britannia Woods Community House opened in 1976 with the purpose of ensuring the families living in the Britannia Woods community had access to social, educational and recreational supports. In the early 1990s, an Emergency Food Pantry was implemented to provide families with an emergency supply of food.
Over the last 40 years, the Community House has been offering a wide range of programs and services that aim to improve the quality of life for Black, Racialized, newcomer and multicultural families and households living on a fixed or low income. Residents can help support the Britannia Woods Community House through donations. Donations are vital to the Community House’s ability to provide quality programs, services and supports. To learn how you can support this amazing community-based agency visit here.
Michelle Heights Community Centre offers a variety of summer camp programs, after school programming and youth programming. The gym at the facility is its main feature and very well utilized. One of the popular programs offered is youth basketball. It was a privilege to meet with some of the staff today, some of whom were participants when they were children and now working with the facility because they wanted to give back to the community.
