The NCC recently made a post on social media about aggressive wild turkeys and what to do if you encounter them. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to share some information with residents as Bay ward is no stranger to these gobbling waddlers who inhabit Mud Lake.
Wild turkeys can stand more than a metre tall, have a wingspan of up 1.4 metres and can weigh more than 10 kilograms. They are surprisingly strong flyers and roost in trees at night. Aggressive behavior among turkeys is most often observed during breeding season in March, April and May, which means during this time turkeys become territorial and may act more aggressively in the presence of people. If you come upon a group of “mean turkeys” give them space, don’t try to get close to them, choose an alternate route if they are blocking your path, and NEVER feed them.
