International Day of Persons with Disabilities
December 3, 2021

On December 3, the City of Ottawa will recognize the annual United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day is celebrated worldwide by people, municipalities, organizations, agencies and others who have a vital role to play in identifying and eliminating discrimination, marginalization, exclusion and barriers that people with disabilities face. This year’s theme is “leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially challenging for our most vulnerable population including persons with disabilities. Since March 2020, the City has included sign language interpretation in American Sign Language and Langue des Signes Québécoise in all media availabilities and Town Halls related to COVID-19 to ensure the broadest audience possible. In addition, Ottawa Public Health and the City worked closely together to offer specific supports and accommodations that many individuals required to get vaccinated. While progress has been made, our work is not over and we remain committed towards creating an inclusive City for all.
