Forum – Can Ottawa end Violence Against Women?
May 30, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
The World Health Organization reported in 2021 shocking rates of violence against women that had not changed in a decade. Then those rates increased during the pandemic. Canada is committed to being free from gender-based violence by 2030. Ministers for Status of Women declared gender-based violence pervasive, deadly and deeply rooted human rights violations and a major barrier to the expression of individual freedom and societal and collective development; read the joint Declaration.
So can we end violence against women in the city of #Ottawa? Erin Leigh is a passionate intersectional feminist, who worked on policy and budgets in government, and brings perspectives from more than 30 local service organizations. Join us in conversation with Erin around questions such as:
- What needs to be changed in our family and criminal court systems to hold perpetrators of GBV accountable and protect the victims and children?
- How can we provide early intervention in schools with young teens so as to prevent their future involvement in abusive relationships?
- Ministers responsible for Status of Women want to free Canada from Gender Based Violence … what would you like to see in Ottawa to achieve this?
- OCTEVAW is on record as favoring detasking and defunding police. What do you mean? Do you still see a role for the police?
