This week City Council approved the Part One of the Transportation Master Plan. This is a positive moment in what will shape the future of how we move around streets, and how we meet our goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – of which over 40% come from transportation emissions. The work does not stop here. Shifting the majority of our trips to sustainable transportation is a major goal of the City’s Official Plan, and doing so will continue to take encouragement, thoughtful discussion, proper budgeting, and work. We’ll need to continue to focus on connecting residents easily to major transit centers, which is why it was important me to include a change to the sidewalk policy to ensure safe routes to LRT stations, and snow clearing of NCC Pathways to make easy connections by foot or by bike all year long. Thank you to all the residents who have provided feedback on the TMP over the last several years, your comments and input are invaluable. The TMP is considered a “living document” which we can return to if there needs to be change, or policies need re-examining. But the passing of these polices was a great step forward to help make Ottawa a more liveable city for all.
