We have good news regarding the removal of the overpass, and the widening of the shoulders!
In April 2023, City Council approved the Transportation Master Plan Part 1, including a new list of Active Transportation Projects. This included a Cycling Project to widen the roadway on Carling Ave beneath the Beachburg rail corridor to address safety concerns at this pinch point. The City is proceeding with this project; the road modifications have been approved and the project will now proceed to detailed design including final confirmation of technical feasibility. Construction timing is unknown.
The works include removing the CN Rail (CNR) overpass, abutments, and guide rail on Carling Avenue approximately 430 meters east of Burke Road and adding a 2.0m paved shoulder to provide connectivity for active transportation. Completing these works will remove the narrowing in the roadway, improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. There are no plans in the foreseeable future to activate usage along the Beachburg rail corridor. Furthermore, the existing structure is in very poor condition and would require replacement or rehabilitation if it were not being removed.
