SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The purpose of the City-led Career Showcase is to attract and engage competitive talent from the four designated groups (Women, Indigenous people, Racialized people and Persons with disabilities), as well as youth from the various educational institutions in the Nation’s Capital. There will be current and upcoming employment opportunities themed and grouped into sectors, i.e. engineering, technology and trades.
In addition, there will be workshops aimed at supporting applicants with the recruitment process, preparing a resume and cover letter; creating your City on-line profile; and a question/answer panel discussion. This career event is part of the City’s Outreach and Recruitment Strategy, demonstrating the City’s continued commitment to be a diverse and inclusive organization that is representative of the residents it serves.
BACKGROUND:
Close to 30% of the City of Ottawa workforce is eligible to retire in the next five years. This changing demographic has created an additional focus on attracting youth and people from diverse groups to come work and grow their careers at the City.
Last June 8th, the City of Ottawa hosted its first City-led Career Showcase. All City departments were represented profiling a vast array of services and career choices. Evaluations from this event were excellent with 92% of participants reporting that the event met their expectations, and 95% of attendees stating they felt confident applying for a City job.
The City is dedicated to a workplace that is built upon the values of respect, equity and inclusion – removing barriers and ensuring everyone has an opportunity to realize their talents and potential. This year’s event will target specific roles that are difficult to fill due to skills shortages and/or roles where departments are attempting to build a pool of candidates for positions that are more frequently recruited.
To ensure the inclusivity of this event, once again the City has engaged its partners from the Community Champions Table Network (CCTN) to gain their input on the event agenda, and to aid in promoting the event to their networks.
The Career Showcase will take place:
- Date: Thursday, October 3, 2019
- Time: Noon to 6:00pm
- Location: Jean Pigott Place (as well as various breakout workshop rooms all at 110 Laurier Ave.)
