- Construction start: summer 2021
- Construction completion: tentatively fall 2021
- EDIT April 2024: This project is currently on hold.
The City of Ottawa will be implementing transit priority measures along Carling Avenue between Lincoln Fields Station and Bayswater Avenue in both eastbound and westbound curb lanes. Designated shared bus/bike lanes will be implemented in select sections where three general purpose lanes exist today.
The City of Ottawa has identified three intersections on Carling Avenue that warrant safety improvements. Carling Avenue at Edgeworth Avenue will be modified to address pedestrian safety concerns including shortening crossing lengths, straightening skewed crossings and implementing accessibility improvements to meet the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements.
The intersections of Carling Avenue at Clyde Avenue/Cole Avenue and Carling Avenue at Broadview Avenue are being upgraded to include fully protected left turn phases on Carling Avenue east and westbound. As a result of implementing the protected left turn phases on Carling, the extension of existing eastbound and westbound left turn lanes at the intersections will be implemented as required.
Currently vehicles can turn left when there is a suitable gap in traffic. In order to implement the protected left turn phase, we will be adding new signal displays. Vehicles will only be permitted to turn left when there is a green arrow displayed. This change will reduce the risk of interactions between left turning vehicles and oncoming traffic, as well as left turning vehicles and pedestrians crossing east-west.
