Environment and Climate Change Canada is hosting delegations, representatives, partners, and stakeholders from around the world for the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. These negotiations are similar in scale to the Paris Agreement for Climate Change, but for the reduction of Plastic Waste.
In 2022, the international community committed to developing an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution by the end of 2024. There will be a total of five INC sessions; three of which have already taken place in Uruguay, France, and Nairobi, with the fifth and final to take place in Korea later this year.
The Canada’s Plastic Action Zone sessions include a wide variety of panel discussions, roundtables, workshops and demonstrations aimed at ending plastic waste and pollution through domestic and global action, innovation and collaboration across all levels of government.
The City’s Solid Waste Master Plan will explore steps that the City can take to manage plastics within its regulatory ability that compliment actions taken by other levels of government and corporations.
INC-4 being held in Ottawa provides the opportunity for residents to participate in these exciting sessions. If you are interested, please visit the website, and act quickly as registration is now open and spots are filling up quickly!
Thank you to Councillor Shawn Menard, Chair of our City’s Environment and Climate Change committee, for highlighting the importance of this opportunity and sharing it with our residents.
