Our neighbour, Bonnie Abayomi Esan, has liver cancer. He is on the transplant list for a liver and needs a living donor with blood type O+, O-, B+ or B- to donate at the Toronto General Hospital to save his life. He is a husband and father with three wonderful children aged 6, 10 and 14.
Living liver donation is when a live person donates a portion of their liver. A living donor’s liver regenerates in approximately six weeks!
The donor does not need to be a relative or of the same ethnicity (that matters for stem cells, not organs). The criteria for living organ donors are different than for blood donors. If you are not eligible to donate blood, you may still be able to be a living organ donor.
Bonnie works full-time at Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada, and part-time as a support worker for people with disabilities. He was born in Nigeria, West Africa. He moved to Montreal six years ago and to Ottawa three years ago with his wife and children. He is the only member of his family in Canada.
Bonnie loves nature and gathering with friends for lunch when his health allows. He loves going to Andrew Haydon Park and Britannia Beach and walking on the sand barefoot. He also loves to watch boxing and The Ellen Degeneres Show. He also loves world history and reading to understand why things happen.
