In celebration of this year’s Bay Ward’s International Women’s Day (IWD) I invite residents to join me virtually on Tuesday March 5th from 7pm to 8:30pm where we will hear from four very special speakers. The first being Four-time Olympian Sue Holloway. Sue made history in 1976 when she became the first woman to compete at the summer and winter Olympic Games in the same year. She made her Olympic debut in Innsbruck Austria as a cross-country skier before being part of the canoe/kayak sprint team that summer in Montreal. Sue is also a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of fame.
In addition to Sue, we will be joined by Bay ward’s own Judy Dudley. Judy is the volunteer President and founding member of the Britannia Winter Trail (BWTA) – A community-led, volunteer run Urban Winter Trail. Judy is a proven advocate for physical and mental health, encouraging people to get outside during our long winters by utilizing the multi-use trail for many activities including cross-country skiing, winter biking and walking. The Trail provides a response to some of the barriers experienced by racialized and marginalized communities to outdoor activities, she is the force behind the programming; providing free cross-country ski lessons and equipment loans, ensuring everyone has free access to this winter activity.
I am also excited to announce that we will be joined by two local youth from Notre Dame High School, Heritage and Rawan. They are both exceptional young women who lead many initiatives at the school. They will be discussing their roles as peer leaders and what they do to inspire inclusion.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. When women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.
I do hope you will join us on March 5th as we hear from two remarkable women who have blazed trails in their respective fields. They will share their incredible journeys towards achieving their personal goals while creating pathways to inspire other women and young girls. I am looking forward to sharing this meaningful occasion with you.
Residents can RSVP here to participate.
